Dr. Ted van Essen

Dutch TV viewers know him as ‘Doctor Ted’ from his weekly appearances discussing medical subjects on TV in the Netherlands, but Dr. Ted van Essen is also known for over 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals on the subject of influenza prevention.

He obtained his M.D and G.P qualifications at the University of Groningen and went on to receive his Ph.D. at Utrecht University for a thesis dealing with the organisation of successful implementation of guidelines on influenza vaccination. A former member of the Influenza Vaccination Committee of the Dutch Health Council, he is currently a member of the Dutch Program Committee for the National Influenza Vaccination Program. He is also treasurer on the executive committee of the European Scientific Working group on Influenza (ESWI).

A GP since 1976 and a vocational trainer in Amersfoort since 1981, he was president of the Dutch College of General Practitioners from 2000-2004. He also held the post of assistant professor from 1992 to 2012 at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, University Medical Center, Utrecht.
