Asthma + Flu? A risky mix

The flu is dangerous for asthma patients. Their already weakened immune systems mean they’re more likely to experience severe complications with the flu. And with the flu virus an asthma trigger, they risk worsening symptoms or an asthma attack and a trip to the hospital.

Children with asthma are particularly vulnerable. They lack prior immunity and are exposed to the virus more frequently. In fact, the flu may be responsible for almost a quarter of their asthma attacks during the peak flu season.

The flu vaccine can help people with asthma stay well and free of their symptoms. But only 40% of asthma patients get vaccinated each year; they simply don’t recognise the danger.
